Winter weather brings freezing temperatures, and the Tigard/Tualatin and surrounding area is anticipating snowy conditions. Ensure your home or business is prepared by reading the tips below.

Drain water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines. Do NOT put antifreeze in these lines unless directed; antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces, if needed. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
Ensure that areas where water supply lines are located are insulated enough. Consider leaving kitchen and bathroom sink cabinet doors open and dripping over night if you think they risk being frozen.
Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes - even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.

If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home set to a temperature no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Temporarily suspend the use of lower nighttime thermostat temperatures to lower the risk of frozen pipes.

A frozen pipe bursting is a terrible ordeal to come home to, but did you know your pipe could still be frozen without bursting? The following five tips can help you identify and thaw frozen pipes if you ever find them in your home or business.

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
Apply heat to the section of the pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

Winter Storm Watch means: Be alert - a storm is likely to occur. Double check your emergency kits and review your preparedness measures.

Why don’t hurricanes hit the west coast?

Living in the Portland Metro and surrounding areas can sometimes feel like a temperate oasis from natural disasters. While earthquakes are possible, we don’t experience them as often as Californians do. Snow and ice storms are our most common dangerous weather events, as well as wind and thunderstorms. Here at SERVPRO of Tigard/Tualatin, we understand how damaging wind and thunderstorms can be for residents. But what about Hurricanes?

If you’ve ever wondered why hurricanes seem to never hit the West Coast of the United States, we have some answers. First, you have to consider ocean temperature and currents. As you can see in the NOAA thermal image to the right, the Pacific Ocean differs from the Atlantic, which has a warm current that originates in the Caribbean and travels nearly the entire length of the East Coast. Warm surface waters is a large contribution to the development of hurricane activity.

On the West Coast, the Pacific Ocean is simply too cold to develop or maintain hurricane activity. On occasion, Oregon and the west coast will receive a storm front that formed from the remnants of an Asian Typhoon that traveled east across the Pacific Ocean, however the power in those storms are diminished by the cool temperatures of our coastlines. While we can end up experiencing heavy rainfall and windstorm conditions from the remnants of Asian Typhoons, we rarely, if ever, see the force of those storms maintained as they near the American West Coast.

In Oregon, we’ll likely never experience something as severe as the hurricanes that affect the southeast and East Coast states in the U.S.. The type of elevated storm we may experience on our coast, however, is something like a recent event you may remember - the 2007 Great Coastal Gale.

While not a hurricane, this 2007 storm event had a few conditions that made it significant: it was long in duration, had hurricane-strength winds, and had excess rainfall that caused widespread flooding in the region. According to the Associated Press, Pacific Power reported that this 2007 storm caused over 37,000 homes and businesses to be without power in Washington, Oregon, and northern California, and continued dangerous wind gales prevented workers from restoring power until safer conditions were established.

The residents located in the South Metro area in the Portland Metropolitan area, there are various different ways to keep informed during inclement weather events, including severe storm events. If you don’t have a landline phone or want to be notified via other communication devices, you can register at PublicAlerts.org. You will be able to choose voice over internet (VoIP) phone alerts, email alerts, and/or text/SMS messaging alerts.

City of Beaverton

To stay informed in the Beaverton area, you can always visit the City of Beaverton website here to see what the current conditions are. Additionally, you can register for email, phone, or text/SMS alerts on PublicAlerts.org.

The City of Beaverton has also installed a low-power AM radio station that broadcasts within a three-mile radius from the tower installed on the roof of Beaverton City Hall. You can tune in to the radio station at 1610 AM, known as WQCI-718 by the FCC. In the event of a disaster or emergency, citizens of Beaverton will be able to listen to WQCI-718 for up-to-the-minute reports, instructions, and specific alerts that would pertain to the Beaverton area specifically.

If you hear about a flood in your area, please remember these tips:

If water enters the building you are in and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor and wait for rescuers.
While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.
Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.
Avoid floodwaters. They may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage.
Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
Return only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Responding to flood water intrusions in your home

Whether or not your property is in a flood zone, it’s important to understand how you can protect your property in the case of a flood damage event. Here are some action steps you can take to protect your property before a restoration professional like SERVPRO of Tigard/Tualatin/Lake Oswego/West Linn and Beaverton responds.

Please only perform these actions if the structure has been cleared as safe to enter.

Take the greatest caution while entering your home, and wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing when dealing with flooded areas. Wear protective clothing at all times.

Photograph The Damage. You can never take too many photos. Your insurance company will thank you and you will have a much easier time with your claim if you have good photos.

Hindsight is always 20/20. When we look back we always see signs we missed, mistakes we made and things that could have gone a lot better. Emergencies are no different.
