This week is Banned Book week, a time to honor and fight for books that have been challenged or banned for various reasons, to make sure that they are part of our lives and our development. Judy Blume said it best; “Something will be offensive to someone in every book, so you’ve got to fight it.” So many books on various lists, are beloved classics that shaped us, our expression and our worldview. The Handmaid’s Tale paints a futuristic world that feels eerily similar to ours at times, it has been challenged for years and has appeared on the 100 most frequently challenged books list for the last 20 years or so. “Ignoring isn’t the same as ignorance, you have to work at it.” Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale.
